Namaste, friends. Here is a Howto:
MacOSx86 10.4.5 via VMWare on WinXP Pro Sp2

Note: I do not condone or approve the downloading of illegal software. If you are not authorized to install this OS, or possess any files relating to it, please navigate away from this post/page immediately. Thank you.

Let's begin, shall we?

Step 1: Prepare your media. I used a generic pre-patched MacOSx86 .iso that appeared one day, it is bootable and is an install disk (you have to install it, no pre-working image.)

Step 2: Create a new profile in VMWare.
A) Identify this new profile as "Linux" or, if you have it, "FreeBSD" which is better.
B) Name it what you'd like and allocate at least 256 Mb of RAM.
C) Create your virtual hard-drive and allocate as much space as you'd like (at least 6 gigs), I specified 20Gb. Also, Create the space immediately, trust me, it's worth it.
D) Then, after everything is created, open the .vmx file in your Virtual Machines folder (it should be what you named the profile (also it should be in My Documents)) and add this line to the top of the file paevm = "TRUE" - using only what's in bold.
E) Save the file, insert your disc, and start the virtual machine.

(Note: Be aware that it is totally normal for you to have to reboot a few times during this step and all steps ahed!)

Step 3: Installing OSX
A) The Virtual Machine should auto-detect the CD, and boot from it.
B) You should see the Darwin command prompt appear, hit enter to boot, or enter advanced options and type "-v" (no quotes) to see exactly what is happening along the way.
C) Wait.
D) Still waiting? The screen may be blue now, keep waiting.
E) Great! Now you should see something like this:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Step 3: Subset A: Installing
A) After the intro, and the license you'll have to select the drive to install OSX to. However, the list should be blank.
B) In the filebar, click Utilities -> Disk Utility.
C) Select the virtual hard-drive you created using VMWare, and create a new label to be partitioned (name does not matter). Select 1 Partition for the volume scheme, and then click "Partition"

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

D) After the utility has completed, it should be avaliable for you to install to:
E) Select the drive and click Continue

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

F) You should be greeted by the welcome screen, and a few more options after that. Choose the best options, and click continue.
G) Finally the package installation process will begin. During this time I recommend doing something - like writing a book, or drawing a 1:1 scale map of your town. Personally, I walked the dog. (Note: The estimated time remaining is lying to you)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Until finally, after it feels as though we can't wait any longer, we come to this screen:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Step 4: Final Configuration
A) Now that everything is loaded, the virtual-computer will restart. When it loads again, it will ask you to fill in your personal information. Note that your license does not require you to register with apple.
B) After you have entered your personal info, you will create a user account. This is not the "root" account, so don't mistakenly create 2 users for that purpose (I will post about that later).
C) After you have created a user account and given Apple your blood type, OSX will boot up.
D) Now you should have a fully working version of OS X 10.4.5! Congratulations, pat yourself on the back, and have a nap. :)

Edit:
A few of you have been getting good use out of this reply I put in the comments section, so I'm moving it here to the main tutorial since it seems to be common.
If your install goes fine but after you reboot you cannot get Mac OS X to start (b0 error or something like it) then follow these instructions to set your partition to active:
Boot the virtual machine with the disk in, and hit F8 to get to the prompt. Type -s to start in single mode. When it boots into the command prompt type fdisk -e /dev/rdisk0 then type show, or print I forget which. You should see something like this:
fdisk: 1> print
Disk: /dev/rdisk0 geometry: 24321/255/63 [390721968 sectors]
Offset: 0 Signature: 0xAA55
Starting Ending
#: id cyl hd sec - cyl hd sec [ start - size]
------------------------------------------------------------------------
*1: AF 0 1 1 - 1023 254 63 [ 63 - 390721905] HFS+
2: 00 0 0 0 - 0 0 0 [ 0 - 0] unused
3: 00 0 0 0 - 0 0 0 [ 0 - 0] unused
4: 00 0 0 0 - 0 0 0 [ 0 - 0] unused

The * before 1 means it's active, so the BIOS will boot from it. If you don't see that then that's the problem. To fix it type flag 1 (1 being the number with the OS on it could be diff. for you) then type quit to save changes and type reboot . Take the DVD out and restart the virtual machine, OSX should then boot and things should be perfect!

Basic tips and tweaks!
1) If things are slow try typing 'platform=X86PC' at the boot prompt (no ')
2) Turn off dock magnification
3) See if you can set the appropriate resolution. At boot type "Graphics Mode"="1280x800x16" - substitute in the correct values. (with quotes!)
4) If the system hangs, boot in verbose mode (enter -v at boot prompt) and note the error.
5) If your chip only has SSE2 search for the Maxxuss sse2->sse3 patch (run PPC apps)
6) Make sure you don't have AppleTPMACPI.kext on your system, and if you do - delete it.
7) Still no dice? The osx86 Wiki may help.

I got up to (Step2) (D), but I'm having trouble finding the line 'paevm = "TRUE"'. I clicked open on my FreeBSD.vmx file and it started up my VM, so I changed the file extension from .vmx to .txt but there was no paevm = "TRUE". This is what I got in the .txt file.

If you could tell me what I'm doing wrong I would really appreciate it. By the way I'm using VMware Workstation 5.5.1 build-19175

Hey there, it's good that you didn't see a line paevm=true, because it
shouldn't be there :)

Just go ahed and open the .vmx in notepad, and add the line to the top
of the file, then save it and everything should be great :D

Thanks for reading my guide, I hope your install goes well, and feel
free to ask anymore questions!

Very exciting. (1) Think it'll work on VMWare for Linux? and (2) Is your setup exportable as a VMWare Player?

Hmmm...yeah I have a few ideas.

When you partitioned the drive did you set the partition to "active?" If you didn't you could either try again and set the partition as active, or tell me and I'll tell you some commands for the fdisk utility that should fix it. However...it's odd since it's a virtual machine. I wonder if you could get me a screenshot? Are you doing this through VMware? Also, which build are you using? HOTiSO? Deadmoo?

Cheers

Well, i don't have a physical partition dedicated to Mac OSX, since i have installed it on a VmWare 6 Gb virtual disk image, NTFS formatted. Then, during installation, i formatted it in HFS+ filesystem (disk utility) and installed MacOsX on it. Everithing was (slowly) ok. But, when all the files are copied, after reboot, on black screen, after accessing HD-CDrom for around 10 seconds it appears only the message "b0 error" and the VMachine freeze.
I've used a Mac.OS.X.Tiger.10.4.6.X86-HOTiSO image and i don't have installed the sse3 and AMD patches (i don't have AMD and my P4 supports only SSE2).
Now i can't post a screenshot, maybe later, but it's only a completely black screen with a "b0 error" message. I've done all as a installation on a FreeBSD machine with 256Mb Ram assigned and the DVD drive linked to the Physical Drive (i have burned the image on a DVD).

anonymous, I don't see why this won't work on Linux.I'll look into the image.

Fabul,

OK. A few things. #1 did you set "paevm=true" in your .vmx file? OSX requires PAE support. Also, even though it's a virtual hard-drive, that doesn't mean it doesn't have to be active. It is still treated by the OS as if it were an actual physical hard-drive. I think yours may not be set to active. Try this: Boot the virtual machine with the disk in, and hit F8 to get to the prompt.

I hope this helps, if it doesn't give me your e-mail address and we can talk about different solutions.

Cheers.

...You was Right!
The partition was not active, i followed your indications and everything gone right. Now i can boot.
The system is REALLY slow...At startup it takes around 30 secs only for completing the final progress bar . I don't have the apple TCPM kext file.
The RAM is NOT used at 100% (around 1/3 is free), but the CPU usage goes always to 100% also only running itunes and Safari with normal internet browsing or other simple tasks. I have A 3.06 GHz P4.
Sound is corrupted (crackles), the ac97 is recognised but in Utility/Midi-Audio config i can see only 48 KHz as Output samplerate and not the more conventional 44.1.
How can i make change the com.apple.boot.plist for making permanent the screen resolution change?
I think that this machine have to be strongly optimized and that there is very much room for performance improvement. But... how?

Thank you for every suggestion!

fabul,

I understand what you mean. You should be able to squeeze a little bit more performance out of your virtual machine, but understand that it's not going to run too well in VMware, it's just one of those things. Now that you know it works on your PC, you could try creating a partition and installing it on that partition, that would get rid of most of your speed issues. Your user score is very low, I'll look into a few tweaks to see if we can get it running any faster in the VM.

Anonymous,

looking into your error now, check back as I should have a solution by the end of the day.

I was having the same problem as fabul, followed the instructions to set the partition active, and got it to boot (hurray!). But immediately after the first logo, I get a system message that the application has shut down the processor. The apple screen says I need to reboot, but the problem simply recurs.

10:16 PM
Anonymous patrickd said...

Hmm... checking my processor, it is apparently SSE2 (Intel 2.8 Gig P4). Could that be the problem?

10:28 PM
Anonymous fabul said...

mmm, strange...
Are you sure you have NOT selected the SSE3 patch option during installation? It could be that if you have installed the SSE3 patch also, the system tries to use SSE3 and this generate a CPU hardware failure.

10:33 AM
Blogger Traveller said...

patrickd,

Just having an SSE2 capable processor isn't the problem, as SSE3 is only needed to run PowerPC apps. Therefore, you can still run the OS. That's a very odd error you're getting and I haven't seen it before. I'll do some research into it, but you may try re-installing as it seems like something went wrong. Check back in a bit and I may have an answer.

Anonymous,

I would suggest that you also try a re-install since it sounds like on boot the system isn't even finding the OS. You may try having a look at your HD and see if it's trying to boot from the right place. Very odd...

Sorry for my absence for a few days there everyone, internet was out around here. Cheers!

Unfortunately OSx86 doesn't work on AMD processors, only intel. So there is no way to make it work for your setup, sorry :(

This may be the problem for a few of you, in which case there is no remedy. However if you are using an intel processer and still get this error let me know so we can find a solution. Have another box that's intel? Try that one.

Cheers.

I thought there's an AMD patch? btw.. My system is P4 2.66 SSE, SSE2. SSE3 support..

It does support AMD processors. Just get the latest 10.4.6 JaS release iso. Then look for the latest JaS PPF patch. Apply the patch to the iso, then install. It will then work on Intel or AMD processors with no problems.

Hey, Traveller, thanks for this guide. Very straightforward and has helped with every issue I've faced up until this last one:

I'm installing off a HotISO 10.4.6 DVD. My setup is I've got a Gentoo Linux box with the latest VMware Server installed. I couldn't get it to boot off the ISO, so I burned a copy of DVD and used that to install. Everything seems to install just fine, but as soon as the VM reboots, I get the grey screen with the Apple logo and then it pops up a screen saying "You need to restart your computer" in a few different languages. I can't get it past that point.

Any ideas?

Blogger The Spoonman said...

Nevermind...I decided to just start a new install to see if I missed anything. When I got to the install part it asked me about upgrading. That's when I noticed the patches, smacked myself on the head, and said "Duh, you have to do a custom install!" Up, running and looking at that livepage.apple.com. Nice! Thanks again!

Hi,

im facing the problem that MacOSX under VMWare always asks me to reboot. I've an Mobile Intel Pentium 4 and installed SSE2 patches of the MyIZAR 10.4.5 iso. What I receive as message:
panic (cpu 0 caller 0x0019C352 - Unresolved kernel trap)
Any ideas?

Blogger Traveller said...

Zelduy, if you're still having that problem (I know it's been a while, sorry) start in verbose mode by going to the prompt during boot and typing -v. Note the output and post it here.

I was unaware that an AMD patch had been made :P guess I should keep up before I mouth off, haha :) That's terrific, so AMD people rejoice! As for your errors, you may try what spoonman did, if you still have a problem and you're sure you've got everything let me know, I don't know much about the AMD side of things, but I doubt it's any different than intel. At any rate post the error if it continues.

dh10050, I am still trying but haven't yet gotten vmware tools to work. Sharing does work, however the tools will not install.

Spoonman, awesome I'm very happy that this guide was useful to you, are there any other guides you might like to see as well? I see you use gentoo, have you done anything with wine? I'm trying to get an app to work but having a terrible time with it. Thank you once more for the comment. :)

Lastly, meepmeep. Meep!
You can pull off OS X without SSE3, but SSE2 is a requirement (I don't think it's changed?) I'm not sure if that's what you meant, if it is than the install won't work as it requires at least SSE2. Though I think you mean SSE3 patch, so let me look into it and I'll post something again here in a few hours.

Sorry for these big log absences everyone, I'm glad so many people are getting good use of this guide! I will have better attendance, I promise :D hahaha. Thank you, and metta friends.

Meepmeep, I think I have a solution for you. When you boot the virtual machine hit f8 to get into the darwin command prompt, type -x. That should boot you, if it does (and if you're using a radeon gfx card) then the problem lies with the ati kext's. Simply remove all the kext files beginning with ati. If I may ask which graphics card you are using?

I hope this solves your problem, let me know how it goes!

hi there,

Is there any chance to find a list of CPUs that comply with the SSE2 or 3 model?
I have an Intel P4 2.53, and tried to give it a chance, but the result was always the same. A "STOP" looking like sign, on top of the boot screen. I must say, that i was making this installation on a 60Gb clean HDD, using no patches whatsoever. The installation was straight forward, but with the same result everytime.
Any suggestions?

My machine is an intel pentium M 1,7 GHz. (SSE2).
But the extrangest part is that if I try installing it natively, completely stand-alone it works. So it must be a VMware problem. Some help would be great.

Mike,
I found out that you will get that error because you can not use the built-in ISO mounting tools in VMware, it does not correctly support HFS+ filesystems. I discovered this by going to OSx86's Guide for VMware. It states this in step 3. I tried using 120%, and everything continued on, not a problem. Maybe this will fix your problem too.

I found the solution to the "CPU is disabled by guest operating system" error message I had earlier.

Basically, I installed OS X86 for the first time as per instructions on: http://buddhistnerd.blogspot.com/2006/06/namaste-friends.html using 10.4.6 HotISO Boot DVD.

I didn't realize that the patches were not applied automatically on the first installation. That's why it crashed and gave the CPU panic error message.

The solution is to re-boot the VM with the OS X86 Boot DVD, and go thru the steps up to the last one where you can click on the 'Customize' button. Click it, and then click the triangle next to patches, to drop down a menu.

You have to select the patches to be installed AS NECESSARY. If you install the wrong one, you cannot uninstall it easily.

Then click on the 'Update' button and this process will take a while, so go and watch a movie or something.

Once completed, the VM will reboot and voilaa you can now start entering details starting with the country you are in.

Hope this helps...

Hi there traveler,

forst of all, I've followed your tutorial and it worked perfectly, thx :). And sorry for posting anonymously, but I don't have a blogger.com acc. May I ask u what version of VMWare did u use for this install?

I succeded in installing on VMWare 5.0 but unable to change the resolution to 1280x800x32, I only able to change it to 4:3 resolutions (1024x768, 800x600, 1280x960).

Did u do any other tweaks on the virtual maschine? And how did u have those black blocks on the left and right of your Screen? I think I'll be satisfied with that, I just can't stand the streched images :(

Thanks a lot :)

Bast.

Hi, Bast.

I'm glad you were able to install everything well. I use version 6 of VMWare. I set up the virtual machine to use the "host machines" display resolution as opposed to stretching the virtual machines resolution to fit the window. Also, when installing natively in order to get 1280x800 (this is my resolution also) support, I had to modify the kext files associated with my graphics driver. If you'll look in my extra hacks and tweaks mini-section at the bottom of the walk-through you should be able to find a link that tells you how to do this. I hope this solves your problem!

My support for this has been waning a bit, and for that I apologise. However know that I do still read your comments and will try to be as helpful as possible.

As always thank you and I'm glad I could be of some service.

Cheers.

Didn't work at all on my lenovo t60p (dual core; triple faulted when switching to the apple screen, making vmware reset the VM) but worked fine on my dell inspiron (pentium 4ht). Don't forget the paevm and to actually mount the image (ie. daemontools, hooking the iso directly into vmware will lead to a hung install).

I spoke too soon. I'm using 10.4.5 universal install dvd. Install works fine, but when I reboot it gets a panic (page fault, cr0 0x8001003b, cr2 0x02425000, cr3 0x016b6000). I tried installing the "intel" and "sse2" options in the custom menu with no change.

Still no luck.. tried a bunch of stuff (thanks to vmware snapshots).

Paperchasin,

What CPU do you have on your DELL and Thinkpad ?

I'm not sure what instruction set is available on the Dual Core CPUs, I have a feeling you have to install the SSE3 patch for that one.

Mine is a T43p, which has a Dothan processor, Sonoma chipset. It works fine with 10.4.6 HotISO, so you may wanna give it a shot.

The error message you got is pretty similar to mine. If I were you, I'd try the SSE3 patch on the Dual Core because it might have SSE3, then if you still have no luck, try the 10.4.6 version.

Hi Traveller!

Thanks for this guide / tutorial. Ive got OSX10.4.4 working on VMWare Server (the free one) on a Compaq nc6220, runs a bit sluggishly but well enough.

Two things im wondering if anyone has managed to do yet...
1) Install VMWare tools - after some fighting I managed to enable root and get the packages untarred and copied to the VM - however when trying to run under root the error 'unable to find the "kidstat" program is produced and you are requested to locate ie - it doesnt exist that I can find on OSX. Any ideas?

2) Tried to download the latest update (not 10.5, 10.4.7 I think) but it wont install. If I can get this installed I might be able to get 10.5 installed too...!

Again, thanks...

Mike:

The launchd error you're getting had me stumped for a while too, but it turns out it's because the install doesn't work if you mount the ISO using VMWare.

You need to either burn an actual disc and install using that, or get yourself a utility called daemon tools which will mount it in Windows and give it a drive letter, then point VMWare to that virtual drive.

I have no idea why this is the case, but it is.

My very first try was to install directly from burned HOTiSO 10.4.5 image with update to 10.4.6 Unfortunately I ended up in Disk Utils because installer don't recognise my SATA Maxtor drive. I've only see the DVD-RW drive with the install DVD, nothing more...

Ok, my first try with this guide:
Following your guide with some changes, like using prepared physical HHD partition ("create partition primary id=af" in diskpart). Install in WMware all done perfectly until reboot. b0 error. Now what? Virtual machine not working - so just try it for real, native run. chain0 in place, boot.ini edited, now reboot! So far so good until ended with blue screen and mouse, nothing more :( trying boot prompt and finaly get up working with -x -v command. Blue screen and mouse again but in a while some window and...window and buttons borders...but nothing more - no text here! Weird, but stil can go on. Logicaly founded and pressing "continue", some radio buttons, but finally ended. Something here is needed to fill, but what? And yeah, a PS/2 keyboard = when I try to write something, system hangs. Thats it, the end for now.

Second round:
Following your guide with partial changes, but now with logical drive in use. Everything just fine. b0 error so set the partition active and whooooa I'm running a Mac OS X 10.4.6, finally! But only as a virtual system in WMware. Nevermind, it's working!

I was so excited that I don't test it that well so I don't know now what exactly were running. I just delete the whole thing and go again...

Third round:
Everything just like in first try until the "b0 error" OK, HFS+ partition set to active, reboot virtual machine to set up and planning the chain0 trick after and dealing with nVidia nForce4 SATA but...after rebooting that virtual machine I only get this: all screen black and this line "HFS+ partition error_"
And when I try a chain0 procedure to boot natively it ended up with this two lines:
"Load of /sbin/launchd, errno 8, trying /sbin/mach_init"
"Load of /sbin/launchd failed, errno 8"
or, when with -f -v, -x -v commands these 3:
"Load of /sbin/launchd, errno 88, trying /sbin/mach_init"
"Load of /sbin/launchd failed, errno 88"
"IOATAController device blocking bus."

So now what? I want a natively running Mac OS X. I have this:
AMD Athlon64 3200+ SSE3 (Venice Core), 2048MB RAM, Asus A8N-E Socket 939 board with nVidia nForce4 ultra (ID's: 0x005410DE, 0x005510DE), SATAII Maxtor 250GB HDD, ATi X550 gfx card, PS/2 Logitech keyboard and USB Genius mouse.

PS: Sorry for my poor english and grammar

Hi,

First of all, Excellent guide.

I'm trying to install on vmware-5.5.1-19175, with a 1280x800 widescreen display, but I can only get 4:3 resolutions to work, despite passing "Graphics Mode"="1280x800x16" to the kernel, as well as trying this:
http://www.profit42.com/index.php/2006/05/14/how-to-make-osx86-run-faster-and-some-other-tricks/

My settings in VMWare for display are:
Autofit guest, Resize guest.

As well, I have the following lines in my .vmx file
svga.maxWidth = "1280"
svga.maxHeight = "800"

the System profiler says that there are no kext files loaded for the VMWare VGA driver.

I'm very eager to have a full widescreen resolution in my emulator, as I'm sure many others are. If you have any more advice, please share it. Are there ary files that can be edited? Where did you get VMWare 6? Are there any other kernel parameters?

Thank you,
Tony G.

Just wanted to ask, what burning tool did you use when burning the ISO to a DVD. My problem is that when I start my virtual machine an error comes up saying:

'No bootable CD,floppy or hard disk was detected.' It also says on the black screen behind the message, 'Operating System not found.'

I have done every thing else in your fantastic tutorial but I am stuck here.

Hi Traveler!

First of all, like everyone else making a pilgrimage to your blog, I would like to say that your guide is excellent.

I'm having a problem with PAE. I set paevm = "TRUE" in the config file, however VMWare keeps displaying the PAE error. Do you have any suggestions?

I own a Mac, and I would like to share the joys of OS X with my sister, who has been struggling along with Windows for a while now. :)

Thanks again,
Christopher

Greetings again all, it's been quite some time. I'm going to be updating the blog and this tutorial very soon, it will be made more straightforward and all the solutions we've stumbled upon (ok mostly you've stumbled upon) are going to be put in the main post. Anyways, on to business...

Christopher,

That is quite odd, I wonder what type of box is it that your sister has? More specifically what is the chipset? Also, did you edit the correct config file? You may have accidentally created a config.txt.txt which windows does do (terrible I know) and the virtual machine isn't getting that value passed to it. I'd say look around for obvious mistakes first, knowing that windows is entirely foolish. If your search yields no results, and the chipset is fairly new then let me know and we can look into other solutions for you.

At everyone else,

I am excited to say that I am now native OSx86 only, goodbye all other OS'. I have QE and CI working, DVD playback/burn, CD burn, etc. Everything except wireless functions wonderfully. What a spectacular OS.

Namaste friends.

Thanks for the quick reply, Traveler.

My sister is running an oldish Acer TravelMate 370. It is an ultra-portable typed machine, with 512MB Ram (sufficient) and a 1.4GHZ Pentium M (it has a Centrino layout.)

The chipset itself reports as an Intel i855GM/GME, revision A2. It isn't new. It fully supports SSE/SSE2, but not SSE3.

I haven't made any mistakes with the vmx file, because I opened it directly, and it boots perfectly (until the problem appears of course!)

Thanks,
Christopher

Thanks for the great guide. Im up and running.
Just a note for people with SATA, you need to have the VMdrive set as an IDE. (LSI Logic)
With Intel Core Duo, choose windows, then Windows NT as the host OS and one CPU. BSD caused boot problems after install. That worked for me anyway.

Hope that helps.

Okay, it seems to me that nobody knows how to get VMWare Tools installed on this. kldstat just isn't there, and I guess it's necessary. However, some people cite Mac OS X as having kexstat instead, but I just don't have it on my installation, though it could be just that I only have 10.4.3 and not newer... Anyways, perhaps the perl script could be changed to look for kexstat for those of you who have it?

Someone, please try it and post to tell if it works...
